    Mayo Hospital Thoracic Surgery

Dear KEMCAANA Members,

I am reaching out to you with a personal appeal for support of Thoracic Surgery Department at King Edward Medical University Mayo Hospital, Lahore. I have been visiting KEMU every year since completing my fellowship in 2014 and had frequented the department every visit to meet Raza Naqvi, KEMC 2004 graduate and my batch mate. Having studied with him and observing him for last 10 years, I can vouch for his integrity, honesty and sincerity without hesitation.
I have committed to support personally, Prof Raza Naqvi, Chair Department of Thoracic Surgery to improve care of his patients over the next year. Thoracic Surgery department provide care to the sickest of the patients and the most needy in Punjab. Chest Trauma is common among poor farm workers and laborers with poor working conditions and lack of safety equipments. Additionally Chest diseases including Chronic Tuberculosis is rampant in Punjab among the most poor and needy. This is amplified with the worsening air quality in Punjab.
Raza has been a Warrior, staying strong and courageous against the obstacles of the working conditions like all our colleagues in Pakistan. Working with malfunctioning refurbished and repaired equipments, struggling against dwindling supplies for simple thing like wound infections and fighting uphill battle for sterilization of poorly equipped and ventilated procedure rooms. I am going to help him fight this battle and I ask your help to win.

Introduction & Background:

The Thoracic Surgery Department at Mayo Hospital is a vital surgical specialty that offers comprehensive services, including lung resections, tracheobronchial surgeries, mediastinal surgery, chest wall surgery, and various emergency procedures. It serves as a lifeline for both routine and emergency cases across the 2000+ bedded Mayo Hospital and its allied facilities. Over the years, this unit has trained numerous specialists, significantly contributing to the medical community.

Current Challenges:

Despite the critical services provided, the department faces significant hurdles due to outdated and insufficient infrastructure. Key challenges include:

  • Theater Limitations: Shared operating theater with the Maxillofacial department, leading to scheduling difficulties.
  • Infection Risks: High risk of wound infections due to compromised OT tables and inadequate sterilization facilities.
  • Infrastructure Issues: Deteriorating conditions, such as large holes in the ceiling, lack of proper air conditioning (currently relying on fans), and insufficient surgical tools.

Urgent Requirements:

To continue delivering high-quality care and training future thoracic surgeons, the department urgently needs:

Surgical Instruments & Equipment:

  • Thoracotomy and sternotomy sets.
  • VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery) equipment and accessories.
  • Fiber optic bronchoscope and bronchial washer.
  • Mediastinoscope and endoscope.
  • Centralized suction machines with multiple ports.
  • Modern staplers for lung and esophageal surgeries.

Improved OT Infrastructure:
